10 Teams Represented at Firestone's First Special Olympics Softball Tournament
Firestone hosted its first annual Special Olympics Softball Tournament on June 16, 2012, at the Firestone Regional Sports Complex with 10 teams in attendance representing Colorado’s Northeast Area. The tournament was the season opener for the softball season for the Special Olympics Colorado Northeast Area. The day-long event allowed for athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Cheers came from the crowds throughout the day showing support for the athletes. Excitement was at an all-time high when the Chick-fil-A at Larkridge cows made an appearance and brought sandwiches for all of the athletes. And to top of the day, the Colorado Rockies mascot, Dinger, made an appearance in the afternoon to help hand out awards to the athletes.
The event also included a selection of local nonprofit vendors, including Envision, Hopes Float, Playing it Forward and That Place Colorado.
The Town of Firestone is looking forward to making this an annual event with regional attraction. Next year’s tournament has already been set for July 27, 2013.
